Technical Detail
The MFS product is based upon
you installing a low cost Firewall appliance behind your Marlin connection.
This Firewall then automatically communicates with the Management Centre to
ensure these systems are protected and kept up to date.
The management component provides the
following services by way of a monthly subscription:
·
Email
Anti Virus Protection
·
Website
Filtering
·
Firewall
Software Updates
·
Monthly
Reporting
1. Email Anti Virus Protection
Incoming POP mail
When the user or mail server behind the
firewall requests mail, the POP request is re-directed by the firewall to the Management
Centre which collects the mail and scans the email using Trend Micro Anti-Virus
before allowing the mail to be received.
If a virus is detected during the scan, a notification is emailed to the
sender and the virus deleted.
The key element
is that the virus scanning service is performed by the Management Centre, and
thus the virus definitions are constantly updated by us, automatically
implementing these as they become available.
Outgoing SMTP mail
When an email
sent by a user or mail server behind the firewall reaches the firewall, the
firewall automatically sends the email to the Management Centre where it is
scanned by Trend Micro Anti-Virus before being sent on to the recipients email
address. Again, if a virus is
detected it is deleted and notification sent to the sender.
2. Website Filtering
When a user behind a firewall seeks a
URL, the website request is sent by the firewall to the Management Centre which
uses Surf Control to determine which category (Drugs, Criminal Skills,
Adult/Sexually Explicit etc.) the requested site belongs to. The category is instantly sent back to
the firewall and is compared to the list of categories in the firewall that
have been denied access. If the
website is disallowed the user receives a message to say they have attempted
access a disallowed site.
The undesirable
categories are nominated by the administrator of the firewall or can be
nominated by the management platform.
The firewall
appliance remembers which category recently accessed web sites belong to. Thus
it does not always need to check with the Management Centre.
The key element
is that the list of sites in various categories subject to restriction are
constantly updated by surf control and automatically downloaded to the
Management Centre.
Website
filtering offers maximum protection from access to illicit material, and
increases productivity by limiting access to distracting or inappropriate
sites.
3. Software Updates
Software updates
are always a problem, when new versions are released they are often overlooked.
In security this can be a major issue as this can leave you vulnerable.
The Management centre
offers automatic updates and logging. As the latest threats are identified and
put into software upgrades your system is automatically upgraded. This ensures
that you always have the best protection possible.
4. Monthly Reporting
Seeing the
threats gives you valuable information about what is going on at your firewall.
It also allows you to see what traffic is being blocked and where this traffic
is coming from.
The Management
centre offers monthly reporting for your security appliance. All events from
your appliance are sent to the management platform. This allows a monthly
report to be generated showing the various threats and viruses that have been
blocked.
These reports
are available via the management center’s web site for easy access.
